My kindergarten girl

We are home from our long trip and it is time to get our life back to normalcy. First thing first, get ellie back to school. Not that I am not a good teacher, but the environment at school is not something I can recreate easily. So she is now going to lakeside montessori.

Being a school aged child's mom for the first time, the first mistake I made was not aware of the school zone speed limit. Only the third day of school I already got a traffic ticket... terrible!

The fun part, for her and me, would have to be the lunch box and preparing lunches. Well I guess it is fun because I have not yet returned to work.

She is adopting to the new school well. Made some friends. And the montessori style is easy to adopt without too much pressure to "catch up". Yesterday she was so proud to show us her first completed contract!

Hope she will continue to do well and move on to 1st grade come next school year!

Homeward bound

A 3 month long trip is finally coming to an end. Lots of ups and downs but we learned to compromise. Although I feel that I can go on for much longer, it is time to go back and get ellie back to school and leave some time to work on our house and other side projects.

We took the Norwegian flight back to new York through Copenhagen. Stayed one night in new York and then finally back to seattle. It was super foggy in Seattle but luckily the pilot landed the plane safely!

It's time to pack our bags and get up and go
It’s time to put this show on the road
And tell the funny stories to everyone you know"

Home sweet home!

Rome, Italy

Time flies. Today is the last day in Rome. This is our first trip to europe, to italy, to rome. I have wanted to visit Italy for as long as I can remember. Happy to be finally here, with my family, and a nice ending to our 3 month long trip.

We have 2 weeks here in rome. We decided to stay in only one place so that it is relaxing and enjoyable for everyone. The place we stayed in is an airbnb apartment in a neighborhood with quite a lot of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Metro and supermarket  (which we visit almost every day) were just a few minutes away. Very convenient. The apartment itself is small but has everything we need. A loft which ellie loves most! It is too small for Rian to be up there so it was mostly me and ellie's play place.

By the metro, there is a piazza with a small playground. That is a place where we will go when there is no plan for the day. Ellie enjoyed the swing set very much. At one point she even tried to swing standing up. Not something we can do in the swing sets back home because the seats are almost always made of soft leather.
We love coffee and luckily there is a coffee maker. But not something we have seen before... likely Rian has mastered it! Italian coffee everyday!!

Funny story... first night we ventured out to a nearby supermarket to get food, we were there a bit before their closing time. We wandered and wandered and got a big basket of things. And I heard that the cashier was clearing the cash drawer! I was like oh no, they have closed! We rushed to the checkout counter. Luckily the lady can speak English and allowed us to buy with credit card.

There are a couple french fries places nearby. After a few days of staring at them, we decided to get some and it was yummy!! There is also a place called pompi very close by, and is famous for tiramisu. Consider that I am a fan I had to try it. Did once inside the restaurant and a to-go before we left. There are a lot of different flavors, but I just stick with classico.

Food is a no-brainer in italy, pizza an Gelato everywhere. However Rian is not a snack/street food person and ellie will not eat anything unless she is hungry. So we didn't do that very often. In general we are happy with the food here. The pizza is quite different but very tasty. I like the potato one and also the anchovy one (also found out that Rian hates anchovies :p)

I tried very hard to find kid friendly activities for ellie and it is just not that easy in rome. Most of the tourist attractions are historic places, art galleries, and churches. We did the castle, collosuem and pantheon but skipped Vatican City and all art museums.

We went to villa Borghese the most famous park in rome. The view to the city there was really nice, and ellie got her playground time. We skipped the zoo though as I don't think the zoo would be better than the ones at home.

I bought a book about rome when we were in Florida. Ellie was particularly interested in the mouth of truth and the wishing fountain. So we did them too and she enjoyed them. We went to the fountain at night. It was so crowed, but also very pretty.

Personally I like the castle the best. Walking inside feels like I am in a movie. Narrow dark corridor, big gates, statues, cannon ball piles, walls with paintings, treasure chests... Also nice views on top and from outside (next to the river). Not to mention there is a cafe inside and a playground outside. Perfect for us :)

We also went to the explora - children's museum (ellie's favorite) and a prehistoric museum (which turns out to be too boring for ellie).

We cooked a few times at home and went though many boxes of cereal. Rian made a point that we had to do only Italian food when we are in italy. Easy peasy for me. Pasta all the way. Marinara, carbonara, gnocchi,  cheese pasta. I learned that Rome people like pecorino.

2 weeks went by so fast. Although we didn't do much of the sightseeing stuff, but I did enjoy the time with ellie and rian, and a taste of the Italian culture. Next time when I come back I will speak italian! Rian predicted that to be 3 - 5 years... we'll see :)

Very cool elevator at our apartment. We need to open the door ourselves. Inside in a double wooden door.

Florida

After cruise we have 1 week in Florida and we stayed in pedy's place. Mom and dad wanted to stay longer with us initially but then dad needs to go back to Hong Kong for some important meeting and the plan had to change. They stayed with us for 2 nights and the 3rd day we took them to the airport and sent them home.

We arrived at the port of Tampa. At the terminal, we waited for a long time for the rental car. Very frustrating. Eventually we had the cat after about 2 hours. Then we got lunch and then visited the Florida aquarium which is righthe next to the terminal. There were lemurs and a lot of sting rays. It was a short visit but was quite fun. At night we cooked with pedy at home. It was great. Everyone was happy to eat at home after the long cruise.

Rian wanted to keep the activities light, so we did 1 day on 1 day off. After mom and dad left we first went to Disney world magic kingdom. Ellie just watched little mermaid on the ship so she enjoyed the ride very much. She actually enjoyed everything very much and asked me if there is a Disney world back in Washington. Nope, too bad. We can go to the LA one pretty easily though. We did quite a lot of attractions given that we were there quite late. My favorite is always the fireworks. Love it!!!

The next one was Kennedy space center. I have been there before but I don't remember anything. I enjoyed the presentation of the Atlantis and also the land on moon. The combination of movies/exhibits give a nice experience. I was also excited to hear about going to Mars.

The last outing was to the beach next to fred's shop. We were there very late in the afternoon and we only have time for a few pictures and short walk. It was very pretty. White sand, sea shells, though a bit cold. After that we went to fred's shop for a while. He was closing the store. We helped a bit and tried the Gelato.

Pedy was doing a lot of marketing for the shop. And need to prepare sample boxes and also decoration for valentine's day. We all helps and it was so much fun to do something together. Pedy and Fred were great host. They also made us hot pot and raclette dinners. Yum!
